Happy to be a part of the Maple Grove community and a proud sponsor of Maple Grove Football #GoCrimson #FearTheLeafMEET AJ STEVENS – MALONE'S OWNER AND CRIMSON SPONSOR
Finding a bigger supporter of Maple Grove football than AJ Stevens, proprietor of Malone’s Bar & Grill, might be nearly impossible. AJ, who launched Malone’s in October 2010, is a self-described sports nut and is especially fond of MG Crimson football.
As he tells the story, Malone’s relationship with MG football started long before he built the local sports bar into one of the city’s top establishments. AJ is a Wayzata graduate and knew head coach Matt Lombardi from his days as a Wayzata football coach. The day that Lombo was hired as the MG head football coach, he walked into Malone’s outfitted in Crimson gear, smiling ear to ear. From there, their friendship evolved into what has been an incredible business partnership for MG football.
When asked why he has chosen to partner with MG Football as its number one sponsor, AJ said that he was raised by his dad (owner of Maynard’s) to give back to his community, and that he also loves the proverbial “Friday Night Lights” – from the cheerleaders, to the band, the football team, the boisterous crowd and, of course, the smoke from the Malone’s grills – and how the football program has such an integral impact on the MG community. As soon as the sponsorship was initiated, AJ’s intent was to create a welcoming atmosphere at his restaurant that could serve as a friendly, reasonably priced home base for Crimson fans to share stories, friendships and, of course, enjoy Crimson football.
Over the past several years, AJ says that he and Malone’s have been extremely fortunate to have worked with many great boosters who have made the relationship with Crimson football enjoyable and smooth, both at home games and also at Malone’s Kick-Off Night. As well, he is proud to live stream games every Friday night at the restaurant and was quick to credit his manager, Nastar, for running the restaurant so that he can attend every Crimson game possible.
AJ and his wife, Lindsey, are Maple Grove residents, and have two children – Annie (3), who loves dance, cheerleading and the arts; and Josie (1), who AJ says can “run through a brick wall.” Perhaps there is a Crimson football player in the Stevens’ family future? AJ is quick to credit his wife for being a rock star at home and having abundant patience with the crazy hours required of him as a restaurateur. He was clear that her support has been one of the most important things to Malone’s success.
Although AJ was a hockey player growing up (both at Wayzata HS and at St. John’s University), he is a football fan through and through, and views MGYFA as one of the most successful youth football programs anywhere and that the youth teams significantly contribute to the high school program’s reputation as one of the top programs in MN.
When asked if there’s one thing he wants people to know about Malone’s, AJ told us that he appreciates all of the fans and players and their families who patronize Malone’s and support their business. Even though Malone’s invests a substantial amount of sponsorship dollars into MGYFA and Crimson football, he is adamant that he wouldn’t trade the relationship for anything, not only because it has been a good partnership for Malone’s but because he loves being a part of the Maple Grove Football Family.
Said AJ “I will continue to work my butt off to have a great product for everyone who comes to Malone’s to dine. And I will continue to do as much as I can to support Maple Grove Football because I am so grateful for the support we’ve gotten from the community in exchange for our support of Crimson football.”
AJ – the words “thank you” seem woefully insufficient to convey our gratitude. You may have grown up as a Trojan, but you’re Crimson family now. ... See MoreSee Less
